AI ROI: Show Me The Math | EP5: META Layoffs

Let's talk META;. 8,000 layoffs on May 20. 6,000 open roles closed. 14,000 careers affected before . lunch. The memo does not mention AI once. It says efficiency. So I ran the math on a Friday morning. $53 billion year-over-year increase in AI capex. About $5.5 billion in headcount savings. The cuts cover 10% of the bill. The other 90% comes from the advertising business. But the part that actually moved me to record is not the math. It is the market reaction. Meta stock barely flinched. Two years ago this memo prints $50B in market cap by the closing bell. Yesterday, a shrug. The market has stopped rewarding the layoff playbook. When that happens, the playbook is no longer a strategy. It is a tax. Microsoft same day with 8,750 buyouts. Block, Snap, Oracle, Amazon, Disney, now Meta. This is the quarterly ritual. I also wanted to say something honest about the human side. 14,000 real lives. Mortgages, school enrollments, partners with their own careers. The severance is generous and worth naming. 16 weeks plus 2 per year plus 18 months of healthcare. Better than most. But severance is not a strategy. Three takeaways inside: For CFOs: the Meta memo is your future-state preview For sales and ops leaders: is your AI moving unit economics, or just adding seat licenses For individual contributors: the era where headcount equals value is closing. Show up with leverage. Next episode I am going to stress-test the capex bet directly after Meta's Q1 2026 earnings. Have a great weekend. Do something good with your people. Innovate Monday.
