AI ROI Series | EP24 | Oracle Cut Thousands More. The Compute Bet Just Got Real.

Two weeks ago on the AI ROI Series, I argued that Oracle's story was never the 21,000 layoffs, it was the bet on compute. This week it got real. Oracle started another round of cuts on Monday morning, its debt crossed $125 billion, and it expanded its restructuring budget to about $2.8 billion, all while pouring tens of billions into AI data centers. In EP24 I break the math on that bet. Oracle's capital spending more than doubled to nearly $56 billion in fiscal 2026, it burned about $24 billion in free cash flow, and it beat earnings last week yet the stock fell anyway, even after Larry Ellison cancelled a planned $7.5 billion stock sale. The whole thing rests on a $638 billion backlog that, by the reporting, is nearly half a single customer, OpenAI, on a roughly $300 billion deal that does not fully convert until 2028, with Oracle's cash flow negative until then and its credit cut to one notch above junk. The bigger picture: Oracle spent twenty years becoming a software company, and it is now going back to its roots as an infrastructure company, the landlord for AI, with OpenAI as its anchor tenant. Peel every layer back and it comes down to the smallest number we track on this show, whether a token pays for itself. Directional as always. The data is public. Check my math, and tell me if you see it differently.
