Enterprise AI Weekly | EP14 | Microsoft's Autopilot Costs $5mm? | AI Unicorns? Mostly Donkeys!

Microsoft rebuilt Copilot this week into what Satya Nadella calls "a new operating system for work," and its headline feature, Autopilot, is a proactive, long-running agent that runs inside your company's own Microsoft tenant. In EP14 of Enterprise AI Weekly I cover the week around it: Anthropic shipping Opus 5.5, Oracle invoking force majeure on its New Mexico data center, and Akamai signing an $11.6 billion, seven-year deal to run Anthropic's compute. I also give my honest take on Opus 5.5 as a long-time Opus user, and on what off-the-shelf agents from the platform vendors mean for companies that build custom ones. Then I put numbers on it. One overnight invoice agent, 400 invoices a night, 25 model calls each, at three cents a call, costs about $9,000 a month. Fifty of them costs about $450,000 a month, more than $5 million a year, approved once per agent and never through a purchase order. Seats, licenses, and a monthly invoice cannot show you which agents finished the job and which ones just spent. That is why the record has to exist before the agents do. And to close, the t-shirt: a donkey with a plunger on its head, and why this show will never sell you the AI unicorn. Directional as always. Check my math, and tell me if you read the week differently.
