AI ROI Series | EP26 | Anthropic Spent $7.3B to Earn $4.6B | Why You Need an Agent Harness in 2026?
Anthropic spent $7.3 billion on compute last year to earn $4.6 billion, according to its IPO filing as Reuters reported it. On top of that, it has committed $518 billion to cloud, chips, and data centers over roughly the next ten years, about $52 billion a year, or seven times last year's entire compute bill, every year. You can't walk into an IPO with that math, so every piece of work has to get cheaper to produce. This month Anthropic showed how: Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5, with Sonnet up to 30% cheaper per task at the same price, by Anthropic's own numbers. The trick has a name everyone in AI is suddenly using, and most of us nod along to in meetings: the agent harness. In EP26 I explain what a harness actually is in plain English (think of the best hire you ever made), how Anthropic just used one on itself by counting every step and cutting the ones it didn't need, and why your company needs its own in 2026. Plus one setting most teams never touch that moved the cost of the same model eighteen times, and why cheaper tokens will still mean bigger AI bills. The harness runs the work. The record shows what it was worth. The filing is leaked and unaudited, and Anthropic's numbers are Anthropic's. Check my math, and if you see it differently, tell me.
